SK pharmteco’s targets for reduction of greenhouse gas emissions are now officially validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

Making that announcement, SK pharmteco said its sustainability roadmap aligns with a strict, 1.5°C pathway required to fight climate change.

SK pharmteco, a global CDMO, has production sites, R&D facilities, and analytical laboratories in the United States, Europe, and Korea.

Parameters of SBTi Validation

SBTi based its ruling on an assessment of SK pharmteco’s entire global value chain. This includes the following:

  • Scope 1: direct emissions from owned operations
  • Scope 2: indirect emissions from bought energy
  • Scope 3: all other indirect emissions in the global supply chain.

Overall, SK pharmteco calls SBTi’s approval a “significant milestone” on its way to having Net-Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.

SBTi’s Corporate Net-Zero Standard (V1.3) is currently the most strict framework in the world for corporate climate action. As such, it requires deep and absolute decarbonization across an entire business. The SBTi criteria provide SK pharmteco with an independent, science based seal of approval for its decarbonization strategy.

SK Targets Greenhouse Gases

Addressing this strategy, the company says components include finding renewable electricity, optimizing certain processes, and engaging suppliers. The company will also continue to boost data efficiency and transparency, publicly reporting progress toward 2040 targets.

“Our decarbonization strategy is credible and rooted in climate science,” said Darryl Ratty, Executive Director, Global ESG. “We are providing our customers and partners with the transparency and assurance they need to meet their own sustainability goals.”

“[Our] validated targets offer a reliable foundation for collaboration,” said company Chief Operating Officer David Lowndes. “This validation shows that SK pharmteco is prepared to meet the highest standards of environmental responsibility.”
